My Portfolio

I occasionally invest in startup companies as a classic “Angel investor”. Typically I do so only after an extended time working with the company (though not always). My startup check size doesn’t “move the needle” for most companies; but I can sometimes lead a syndicate via TBD Angels. Even when I don’t lead a syndicate, I’ll often do what I’m able to help the founders raise their target round, via helping polish the investor deck (which I’ve done literally hundreds of times either in conjunction with my own fundraising, or with an accelerator with which I’m associated), making investor introductions, or other help as requested.

As an angel investor, I invest using a portfolio approach. There is data available to members of the Angel Capital Association suggesting that an angel needs to invest in at least 20 companies before an investor can expect to see returns that offset the very frequent losses (including a loss of all capital invested in a company). And you’ll see plenty of those “zeros” in my portfolio (listed as Out Of Business, or OOB below). However, on-balance I’ve got a decent rate of return on my investments, assuming that I “mark to market” those investments that are not yet liquid.
